The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

I’ve just finished reading The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (forget Flylady when I have my ‘free’ afternoons, read instead, that’s my new motto). I’m doing Susan Hill’s free online creative writing course and I thought it only courtesy to read one of her books (actually it’s going to be two, as I have her latest one to read next) and it had to be the classic The Woman in Black. It was as everyone always says of it, very chilling. I read it with structure in mind and I think because I had how the novel was structured foremost in my mind, I did guess in advance most of the twists, which don’t worry, I won’t say what they are, although I thought the reasoning behind the Woman in Black’s wrath was very good and I felt great sympathy towards her. Even so it was enjoyable and it evoked the marshes of what I guess are (it never actually says in the book) Lincolnshire very well, I used to live nearby in North Norfolk and the marshes and the fens in general always struck me as eerie, depressing places. But in summary, definitely one to read, specially this time of year, as Halloween approaches, in a darkened room!
