I thought about lots of separate posts and then decided against it, so . . .
. . . . here’s lots of general ramblings all tied up together, I’ll try and be organised and put headers if for example because you’re here because I’ve put the shopping tag on and you want to skip all my ramblings about crochet and speech therapy.
Speech therapy
Our second trip in two days to the children’s centre at the hospital today, this time for speech therapy and there’s nothing like speech therapy to make you a little depressed. Whereas yesterday’s appointment with the consultant went ok with Boy Lacer apparently ‘catching up’, in speech therapy today he’s apparently is likely to have a communication disorder and I know what that means and I don’t think it’s as straightforward as autism (not that that is ever ’straightforward’). Boy Lacer is affectionate, can show imaginative play and so far (in my untrained eyes at least) is not showing any signs of a learning disorder, he can already count to ten and draw faces, two skills which surprised me actually. It has crossed my mind it might be aspergers but we’ll see. I think alot can be said about when is it appropriate to ‘label’ things, I see a lot of myself and Mr. Lacer in Boy Lacer in that he is on the introverted side and so are we but there is nothing that wrong with being an introvert (although I do wish I could make small talk at the school gate easier, which is getting to me at the moment that I seem completely unable to do it, yet I’m fine at coffee mornings, playdates etc. what is it about the school gate?). Anyway both me and Mr. Lacer are university educated professionals (well I was until I became a mum), there is nothing as I say wrong with being a bit ‘quiet’. Human personality is on a spectrum, we can’t all be the same. Me and Mr. Lacer always joke that by the time our kids are teenagers we’ll be hauling Girl Lacer out of nightclubs after she’s sneaked in there on fake id, she is a very confident, popular, party girl already at 4, whereas we say that when Boy Lacer is a teenager he’ll be holed up in his bedroom doing age inappropriate things on the internet, emerging only for food, we’ll see, I know full well both their personalities could change completely. Anyway Boy Lacer has no more ‘proper’ speech therapy appointments for a while, he has a social interaction group instead, that should be fun.
So that was that, at least on the way home the weather was nice (i.e. sunny – which it isn’t now) so we walked the long way back through the park which was nice. Girl Lacer was playing a game where me and her were pirates and if we saw anything blue we had to ‘attack’ them by going “ah ha” in a pirate voice, unfortunately there were a lot of joggers today wearing blue, so we were walking along sounding like a right pair of nutters. Not that I minded ‘pirating’ the joggers, they were all acting as very visual reminders that I’ve just signed up for ‘Race for Life’ again this year and I need to get back to running, I haven’t really run since last autumn. Anyway when we got home, waiting for me on the doorstep was a very promptly posted parcel from Plump Pudding . . .
I’ve got a brand new bag
I stumbled across Plump Pudding when I was looking for a link to something else; Plump Pudding makes gorgeous crafty things like bags and badges of vintage type material and when I saw one of her bags in a vintage fabric literally straight out of my childhood I had to have it. You see when I was little (and now calling this fabric ‘vintage’ makes me feel very old) I used to have a Paddington Bear pillow case, which I loved, now guess what my new bag is made out of? That’s right I’ve got me a Paddington Bear bag.
Gorgeous isn’t it? Although I am wondering if my style level is on a par with a four year olds as Girl Lacer also really loves it (just as she loves my new sewing box) or maybe she could just be one very stylish 4 year old (although then again I let her choose her latest batch of T-shirts and it was with gritted teeth I went to the till and paid for them as they’re hideously pink and girlie). However anyway much as Girl Lacer loves this bag, it’s mine mwah, mwah, mwah, mwah! (evil laughter, evil laughter)! I’ll only be taking it out though when the weather gets distinctly less muddy.
Anyway I would recommend a look at Plump Pudding, the badges I got as well are very sweet and will look just great on a spring jacket (if only it would be spring RIGHT NOW!).
Crochet – oh dear
Crochet attempt no# ‘ah I’ve lost count’ and yes it was meant to be a scarf (for a teddy bear) again.
I seem to be getting unintentionally good at doing ‘collars’. I am (I think) improving though, I know my work is curving because I’m missing stitches, although this time in the middle of the row instead of at the edge (I’ve just about mastered the art of the turning stitch thingy me bob). I also I think fairly successfully managed to introduce a different colour. I will try again, I am determined to do this, I want to make those lovely bright coloured crochet flower things and I think I’d better learn the basics first. I also quite fancy making a crocheted jumper for Boy Lacer with a pattern of a rocket on but I am getting severely ahead of myself there! I get inspired by seeing all the lovely homemade stuff out there in blogworld and well it inspires me!

Hmm, a few things come to mind reading this. Firstly, speech therapists don’t normally diagnose. He probably needs to be assessed by a multidisciplinary team, especially if he is ‘complex’ for want of a better word
Secondly, the autistic spectrum is very broad, as I’m sure you know. My son is on the severe end yet is very affectionate. Each and every child is different, so input from a number of professionals is probably the best way to get to the bottom of it.
Thirdly, it sounds like he is doing really well, so just keep on doing whatever you are doing!

Hi Cathy
Thank you for your message, it’s appreciated
J.
You’re very welcome. If there is anything you would like to ask/discuss privately, there is an email link on my blog. I’ve done a lot of voluntary work with parents of kids with ASD, ADHD etc etc as well as having my own!
