Torchwood Series 2 Episode 3 – thank god for Deus Ex Machinas
I liked this episode, To the Last Man, after the appalling start to series 2, Torchwood is now in my opinion getting better and better. I liked tonight’s episode, genuinely scary with an interesting moral sub plot, although in Mr. Lacer’s immortal words “That was an episode for girls,” and I can see some people might not have liked it. I thought it was far better than the writer’s (Helen Raynor) previous attempt for the Doctor Who family, the awful ‘Daleks in Manhattan‘, however tonight’s episode did suffer from the same problem, the stories for both Daleks in Manhattan and To the Last Man were stretched a little too far and could have ended far earlier but I suppose the constraints of writing for a fixed length of TV, it had to be eeked out and tonight it resulted in the awful deux ex machina of the psychic injection thingy-me-bob, I watched that scene, at the end of what I thought a really good episode and it ruined it a little for me, it was just so convenient, it was like they had an extra 10 minutes to fill, so they had to invent another problem and then a solution that had not been referred to at all at any point before hand, sigh, I know that Doctor Who fans go on, possibly too much, about deux ex machinas but this really was one.
