The Sunday Salon – The Night Watch

Not much a reading day ahead today, me and Girl Lacer (4) will be running the Sport Relief mile on the Embankment this afternoon, but I have managed to sneak back into bed again after getting the kids their breakfast and devour the first 70 pages of Sergei Lukyanenko’s The Night Watch. This book has been on my ‘to be read pile’ for some time and I was looking forward to it, anything billed as ‘JK Rowling, Russian Style’ has to be good, so it was with a bit of grinding to a halt of disappointment when I opened the first page and took an extreme dislike to the opening sentence, with some clunking adverbs littering that and the 70 pages I’ve read so far, it was a bit of a case of gritting my teeth, however I’m prepared to be charitable, as per usual my previous read is influencing my reaction to my current read and unfortunately for Lukyanenko my previous read was Stephen King’s On Writing, so I’m more sensitive to the aforementioned ‘clunking adverbs’. Also I presume Night Watch has been translated, so that probably hasn’t helped but foremost, so far at least, it is a pretty good story and that’s what counts, so far I am enjoying it.

  1. I haven’t come across this but am now imagining something along the lines of Tales of Durmstrang; they always seemed like the type of students who would excel in clunking adverbs. I can’t wait to hear your final verdict. Good look this afternoon.
