The Sunday Salon – Mental ‘To read’ pile
Yes, you guessed it, I’m still reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, except I can’t at the moment as I’ve lost it. This happens to me quite a bit, partly because I tend to read all over the house, during snatched moments and then I forget where I’ve put it down and also because if the book tends to be anywhere it’ll be on my bed (no room on my bedside table lol) and if it’s there when Girl Lacer fancies an impromptu trampoline session, she’ll ‘tidy’ anything on the bed first and put it god knows where.
So in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell’s absence, I have resorted to another ongoing read, I’m Watching Youby Karen Rose, a thriller which is so cliched it’s unbelievable, however it is actually a little bit more fun than Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. However I’ve had another busy week and I actually haven’t had much time to read anything, not even my favourite magazines, so when I had a chance for a lazy bath this morning, it was the magazines I caught up with not the reading.
Much as I haven’t been reading much, books are never far from my mind, so I thought this week I’d share with you my mental ‘to read’ pile, a list which is nowhere near exhaustive because (some genres excluded) I’d like to pretty much read everything. Anyway here’s some of the books which have been looking interesting to me recently.
I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak (after reading the fellow Sunday Salon blog Ticket to Anywhere), I really liked Zusak’s The Book Thief, it didn’t occur to me to check out his other work.
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd (thanks to a great review from another fellow Sunday Salon blog Table Talk)
Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay and possibly all the others in the series if the first one is as good as I hope it will be. The TV series Dexter, which I know isn’t to everyones taste but I think is brilliant and actually quite intelligent in the way it explores why Dexter kills and also how you can’t judge people by appearances, anyway the TV series Dexter is based on Darkly Dreaming Dexter and I want to see how it was translated.
And finally some books (fiction and non-fiction) that arn’t even published yet.
A Snowball in Hell, the latest from Christopher Brookmyre, whom I’m a massive fan, out in August.
By Royal Command by Charlie Higson, the last in the Young Bond series, out in September, which has got better as the series has progressed, no one writes an action sequence like Higson.
Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer by Jane Brocket, a delicious sounding collection of recipes inspired by childhood classics, out in July.
Nigella Christmas: Food, Family, Friends, Festivities by Nigella Lawson, oooh, the prospect of a new Nigella book has me literally salivating, can’t wait until October when it’s out, but then again a Christmas cookery book wouldn’t exactly be needed right now!

Sorry about the comment above, it wasn’t me, it was my 2 1/2 year old sneaking onto my laptop and leaving thought provoking comments. “gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg” probably means, “oh goody, mummy’s going to buy some more cookbooks, so she can make me more yummy cow’s milk free cake” (it’s really easy to convert most cakes to cow’s milk free).
You know, if you’re really busy on other things you could probably do with a cliched read. You don’t have to work so hard with those because you’re already expecting everything that happens. Losing JS might be a blessing in disguise.
I hope you enjoy the Dowd.
I’m Watching You by Karen Rose looks good!
