Beowulf

beowulf

I watched a good portion of Beowulf last night, at least enough anyway to know that I was happy to fall asleep in the middle of it. An ‘interesting’ movie, the animation technique was certainly admirable but at times distracting, for at least the main characters, they modelled the animated characters on the actors doing the voices themselves, so Anthony Hopkins looks like Anthony Hopkins and so on and so on, it was very realistic but I found myself trying to work out which of the background characters had no human basis at all and sometimes on screen it looked like the animators were showing off just for the purpose of showing off, as in ‘look how realistically we can fling this dead body around’. Also, and only another small thing really but it annoyed, the accents of the characters were all over the place, it did not make me feel like I was in Denmark.

Me and Mr. Lacer were really watching it for the script though, as we’re rabid Neil Gaiman fans in this house and we knew he’d written it and watching it, the whole movie did have a certain ‘Neil Gaiman’ feel about it, but not enough to grab my attention unfortunately and I stayed away long enough to see what Angelina Jolie looked like, rolled over and fell asleep (in my justification I did have a disturbed night’s sleep the night before). Mr. Lacer watched the whole thing though and when he roused me off the sofa, I asked him what he thought of it,

“It was a bit boring wasn’t it,” Mr. Lacer goes, “I checked though, Neil Gaiman wrote it with someone else, they must have written the boring bits.”

See, told you we were fans.
