Back to work

Another free morning this morning and instead of escaping down the shops like I did last time, I actually did some work on the work in progress. Currently with my work in progress my heroine is about to break into a temple and steal something and I didn’t have the foggiest how she was going to do it. So I sat down this morning to do some more research on the temple my character is about to break into.

I’ve relatively recently started using the program Writer’s Cafe and it is helping no end, particularly the pinboard function. Basically the pinboard function is a virtual pinboard where you can stick notes, ideas, inspiration for your story, I’ve always dreamed of one day getting an office where I could have a real pinboard to do basically the same thing but that’s not going to happen. I had tried just getting a great big blank sheet of paper and sticking my notes, pictures and ideas down and that has been useful but it’s kind of difficult to find somewhere to store that. So switching to Writer’s Cafe has been a life saver. This is a screenshot of what I created from scratch this morning, c0pying and pasting relevant notes from websites I’ve been looking at (www.touregypt.net has been particularly useful) and adding my own ideas about where my story should go.

Now I know I could have done the same research without a fancy place to put it all but it has helped and I now have a fantastic way to get my main character into the temple in a manner that is going to (hopefully) add a lot more excitement and colour to the story (I’ve been reading Artemis Fowl and have been paranoid that my story is totally flat by comparison). So really excited now and fired up with how the story is going, which is a state I have to get myself in if I’m ever going to do any work, as the demands on my time are so tight and/or I’m just plain knackered that I have to get excited to make myself want to do it and find time (the state I’m in now, I’m far more likely to find the energy to work at night once the kids are in bed).
