I have not yet weaned myself off Rocket Gardens, after growing their gardens for about 2 years now, I kind of feel I should be able to now plant from seed and I have planted some things successfully from seed; butternut squash (although I don’t think the weather was ever good enough to produce more than tiny green squash), some spring onions and some herbs, salad on the other hand, no and it’s salad I really really want to grow. I did try but so few seeds germinated that the ones that did I was highly suspicious that they weren’t actually just weeds. I think it’s the whole sow on the ground nature of salad seeds, I can grow and watch and nurture a seed if it’s in a pot, safe in my little greenhouse but out on my large salad bed (actually an old tin bath shaped thing – the closest I’ve got to a vegetable patch), seeds don’t stand a chance. I blame the snails myself, suctioning up any spot of greenness that dares to sprout before I’ve even noticed. I’ve thought about starting the seeds off in my greenhouse and then transplanting but that’s a hell of a lot more effort than just scattering some seeds on the ground and requires space and time I haven’t really got, so I resort to good old Rocket!
Luckily then that Rocket have branched out into small mini salad or vegetable boxes, as I’m not sure I really have the funds for a whole garden right now and what, like I say, I really veg garden for, is the salad. The boxes cost £5.99, which is what? About the cost of 2 – 3 bags of salad, of which is pretty limp and yucky and goes off before I can use it all, so I’d happily spend £5.99 every month or two, I hope they continue their mini box idea into the spring – summer, because like I say, I think I’m getting pretty confident with the bigger things.
Sorry no linkage (blogging on my phone again, in the bath actually, you didn’t want to know that did you? It’s been a hectic week and I have to multi-task whilst blogging now) but you can visit Rocket here www.rocketgardens.co.uk – ah, who knew that? The WordPress iPhone app actually does do links.
So, for now I have three tubs of salad in my garden ready and waiting for those snails to scrunch them up (don’t worry, the snails in the photo below were promptly thrown over the fence as soon as the photo was taken). I have some Salad Bowl, Mizuna, Winter Purslane (which I loved from last year), red frills mustard (or something like that) and a red dandelion thingy, which’ll be interesting!
