Christmas Birds

Xmas birds

These are badly photographed (and to be honest not particularly well made – and yes I need to paint my window sill to) patchwork birds to be given as Christmas gifts to the kids’ teachers. Both kids chose the fabric for the birds for their respective teachers (Girl Lacer has two teachers, Boy Lacer has four), I think they made some nice bold choices. Girl Lacer also made beautiful labels to go on her birds (not shown in the photo). The pattern is from Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts and this is the second time I’ve made a batch of them, as I made two as teachers’ presents (different teachers) at the end of last term. I wrote at the end of the post about the first batch of birds that I would probably be making them again and well I did and put it this way, I think I’ve got patchwork bird making out of my system now! These weren’t to be honest particularly fun to make, to start with somehow I had cut the pieces for the bird tummies all too big, I have no idea how as I’d scanned and printed the pattern from the pattern sheet. Also my sewing machine was not playing ball, it’s having tension problems again, which I think will be a separate blog post as I’m not sure what’s going wrong and my manual isn’t proving much help, so I think if I post a photo of the problem some of you wise sewers out there may be able to help me.

Having said all that it was really nice to just spend the day today making these; Tuesday and Wednesday where both incredibly busy, particularly the Wednesday, where I had scheduled class reading, class party, (another) rehearsal and work in the evening. I had to drop out of the reading as I had just too much work to do (as I hadn’t finished preparing for work in the evening, partly due to computer problems and partly due to being out at the pub the night before). The class party was a late addition to the schedule and when the class teacher rang to ask me if I could help I was all “Oh yes that’ll be great!” and inside I was on me knees thinking “Not another thing, my Wednesday is too busy!”, but enthusiastic Mrs. Lacer kicked the overwhelmed Mrs. Lacer into submission, the mums don’t usually help with the class parties and I was only asked because I’m a class rep and it was a very nice thing to be able to help them celebrate. Me and the other reps also got thanked for our hard work by the class and the teachers which was very sweet and very much appreciated. But anyway, after those two busy days it was very nice today just to drop the kids off at school, come straight back home, work on something all day and then go and pick the kids up again, bringing them straight home again, bliss.

Traditional Korean Home Cross Stitch

Traditional Korean Home cross stitch cushion

Thanks to a sister lacking in self control, I can blog about her Christmas present as she’s opened it already. This is the cross stitch I was doing that I mentioned several times on here and on Twitter, I listened to quite a few audiobooks doing this one! It was great fun to do though and I love Andwabisabi patterns. The pattern is of a traditional Korean home, which I thought would be quite appropriate as my sister’s fiancée is Korean and lives out there.

This has to be the biggest cross stitch I’ve ever done, I have to admit I did make a few mistakes but they’re not that noticeable. I will always be at my heart a hand embroiderer, as I think hand embroidery is (most of the time) a lot more instant (my sister isn’t the only one with no patience) but I do love dabbling in cross stitch to, particularly the aspects of it that you can’t really do with hand embroidery (well things I can’t seem to do well with hand embroidery), I think it would be hard, for example to do something like this tree and have the same sort of colour effect.

I love the little cross stitch people to (you can see one of my mistakes in this photo, I’d miscounted and made the bridge one stitch too short, which then meant the railings looked odd).

But cross stitching all that white in the houses though did get a bit tedious!

I have another large andwabisabi pattern sitting on my hard drive, something I will definitely be doing, for me this time, in the New Year, now all I need is some more audiobooks to listen to whilst I’m doing it!
