I finally finished with the raspberry bushes today, well no, I haven’t actually, as I need to weed around the bases of the very cut back raspberry bushes that I have left (I cut them back to about a few centimetres from the soil, whether I’ve killed them or not, I don’t know), but anyway, weeding or no weeding, look, you can see right across to the other side of my plot now, now that’s a novelty.
Today I also started to prepare the fruit bed, which is next to the remaining raspberry bush bed, I managed to dig over about half of what I needed to dig over, so I will have to go back tomorrow to finish it off (unless the ominous digging induced ache in my back gets any worse). I need to do it soon as my fruit bushes should be arriving sometime next week.
I also finally took measurements, something I’ve needed to do for ages so that I can actually plan a bit, not that it turns out I’m doing that much planning but a rough shape is forming in my mind.
After taking the measurements and even though it’s taking ages to dig over, my plot now feels tiny and I know there’s no way I could ever grow everything I wanted on it. I realise there is a lot of space bring devoted to fruit but economically that’s what we get through most of as a family, so that’s what has to take precedence.
I should explain as well (as it’s not labelled on the diagram), there is a tall fence behind the end of the plot with the compost bin, which is why I’ll be planting my tenders (peppers, aubergines, things I’m taking a risk with) there, as that is the most sheltered spot, although I’m lucky, all the plot is sheltered really and it’s south facing, so lots of sunshine.
I think in reality I will be doing lots of squeezing in and trying to make the most of spaces when they appear, starting off lots of stuff in pots at home and moving stuff in when a space appears (I’m lucky in that my garden at home is also south facing and even more sheltered – it’s a bit of a sun trap really and I always have to watch things don’t scorch). Anyway, really excited, my planting fingers are twitching!
